Proverbs 8:11 For wisdom is better than rubies;
and all the things that may be desired
are not to be compared to it.
The teacher was one of the nicest guys and I loved how passionate he was about Math and teaching. He was very loyal and dedicated! Email was great b/c I got all my assignments there when I was gone and test preps before every test. Mr. Myer is the BEST!
I thought the instructor was very enthusiastic, friendly, and knowledgable. The course challenged me intellectually.
The course was challenging. The instructor was wonderful and very respectful and helped anyone and everyone.
The picture at right shows the beautiful fall colors in front of
McKinley Hall, where I taught my first college algebra class.
It was taken during the same semester (fall 2005)
and at approximately the end of regular classtime (5:35-6:50 pm).

What is this website for?
Help for everyone! Find inspring fresh ideas and help for your math
dilemmas!--even if you're not one of my students. At math111.com you can
give me your input, and I'll try to use it to benefit you and
others, too. I will be happy to tell you what I know and to help all
that I possibly can. Whether it is your AP Calc exam
or your Ph.D. qualifying exam, I think it
would be an honor to prepare material based on
your questions and to share it with you and
everyone else who will come later.
Come to the Math Lab
at Wichita State University in Room 371 Jabara Hall
whenever you have a question. Many helpful people are there.
I love to be there to do my own work and to help others
with algebra, business calculus, and other classes. Feel free to
ignore any of my published hours and ask me when you need help.
If I am busy, I will tell you so, and ask you to return another time,
or refer you to someone else.
I'm happy to save you frustration by giving you the answer to
a problem that has caused you a lot of trouble. I would recommend
that you visit the Math Lab often and find some people,
including me, who can help you understand and make studying
more enjoyable!

Fall 2009
In Fall 2009 I was offered an excellent tenure-track faculty
position at Friends University, which I accepted. Since then I
have had to teach many more courses, and rather than diminish the
time I spend tutoring and helping my students, I have had to
diminish the time I spend keeping this website up to date.
However, I am alive and well, and I appreciate the concern of
everyone who has noticed that my list of popular math classes
seemed to come to an abrupt and sudden end--don't worry--teaching
and tutoring has led me
to a good fate, not a bad one!
Homework and assignments
Note: changes to the assignments may be
made during class time. Attendance is
important. A * means an extra credit problem.
Some additional assignments may be assigned
and completed during class time.
A scientific calculator is helpful--if your
calculator says sin, cos, and tan somewhere, that
is the right kind. You do not need a graphing
calculator. On some tests no calculators are allowed.
Eduspace or CourseCompass or MyMathLab (not required)
Online homework is not required. My experience has shown
that paper-based homework is best, and it is also the desire of the vast majority
of students I have taught. "Instant feedback" and other benefits
of online homework don't make up for its shortcomings. I
would rather help someone in person than send them to a computer.
I really do love helping you understand the concepts and learn
new things.
Quality of teaching
With God's help, and for your sake,
I desire to be the best teacher you will
ever have.
A record of student happiness and success
Many students have enjoyed my classes in the
summer, fall, and spring semesters. Each student
I care about and I hope that every one has been
an example of a person who enjoyed my math class
better than all other classes.
The satisfaction that students have with
my teaching is best stated in their own
words:
He was very friendly and always smiled! :)
[The teacher was] very good, although the students could use some improvement in that regard. Thank you for all that you did!!
The teacher was one of the nicest guys and I loved how passionate he was about Math and teaching. He was very loyal and dedicated! Email was great b/c I got all my assignments there when I was gone and test preps before every test. Mr. Myer is the BEST!

The course was challenging. The instructor was wonderful and very respectful and helped anyone and everyone.
Any-way, this time I understood everything so much better and I finally "got it." I would like to thank J. Myers for this.
This instructor has been much easier to learn from than previous instructors I have had in this course. I don't think he needs to improve anything.
Very sufficient in getting our homework and tests graded fast and back to us.
It was presented very well. Nothing could be improved. Was willing to give you one on one help. Very good. Enjoyed the class immensely.
thanx for being so nice and helpful, i liked it when you did problems from our homework, that way if i didn't understand it, if i wrote everything down, i could usually go home and figure it out.
Mr. Myers was always available outside of class in the Math Lab for extra help and he seemed to actually care about our grades and understanding of the material. He was also very enthusiastic about teaching, which can be difficult for math.
Very pleasant, well prepared, great enthusiasm. It was nice to have the ability to email questions and receive homework. Great instructor. I enjoyed it. :)
I know that if I ever need anything I can come to you, because you truly care about your students, and I am grateful for that. Thank you so much for being there to take care of me, as I believe you would for any student.
He knew what he was doing. That was comforting.
The instructor was very helpful and willing to work with the students.
The instructor was very good at explaining how to do the problems.
Very responsive to emails and willing to help.
Instructor was very helpful, always responded to emails. Sat down to personally review tests and showed mistakes. Conveyed information very well. Would recommend teacher to others.
Thanks for all the help in Math Lab today! It really helped and I feel a little more
caught up with the class now.
Thank you so much for all your help! It's nice to have such a caring teacher!
Thanks for all the positive emails!
I just wanted to say thank you again for helping me today. I know that you have
as many, if not more, things then me to do right now and I really appreciate you
taking the time to help me. I know that a lot of teachers would not have been
willing to be so patient and helpful and I wanted you to know that it meant a lot
to me. Thank you again.
Joseph,
Thank you so much for all of you help this semester. You were very helpful to me and
you really helped me understand the concepts. You are a very generous person and I
truly appreciate all of your help. Hope you have a great holiday!
Dear Joseph,
Thank you once again for all your time! Thank you for a
great first semester and have a very Merry Christmas!
Thank you for all the effort you have put into
teaching this class. It really means a lot. I can
tell you really care about the success of each one of
us. It gives us a lot of motivation to do well when
we know you will be proud of us. :)
(An email from a parent.) Professor Myers,
We are very proud of her and I know she enjoyed your class.
Thanks,
Personal committment
My first goal is to honor God by doing my best
as a teacher. I want to truly benefit you and
help you by being your teacher.
I want to challenge you intellectually and in your life
to be the best which God created you to be.
I love to teach, and I want to put you first
and make a positive difference in your life. I
want to be more than someone who just knows math,
and doesn't know how to teach it.
Even if it means embarrassing myself and
not having the opportunity to show off my knowledge,
I want to do what is best for you to learn,
not for me to be successful or popular.
I believe
that I can also learn from you, and that I ought
to be reliable and trustworthy as a good friend or teacher
should be. There is great honor for a teacher in playing
a special part in your life. It is a joy to me if I can
serve in that way for you.
